How we worked it out

  1. Roof area: 42 ft × 32 ft × 1.118 (6/12 pitch factor) = 1,503 ft² (15.0 squares)
  2. New roof: 1,503 ft² × $4-$8 per ft² (architectural asphalt) = $6,000-$12,100
  3. Tear-off: 1,503 ft² × $0.50-$5 per ft² = $700-$7,600
  4. Worst case: $6,000-$12,100 + $700-$7,600 = $6,700-$19,700

Method and sources

Each calculator uses the standard formula and the manufacturer's own figures, such as bag yields, and rounds up where running short would cost you a trip. Every step is shown. Cost ranges come from named surveys with the date we checked them. Spot something wrong? Tell us and we will fix it and note the change.

  • National ranges, not quotes. Your area, roof height and complexity move the price.
  • Priced per square foot of roof area (pitch included), as roofers quote.
  • Ranges include labour and materials; some already include tear-off, so it is shown separately.
  • Tear-off: about $0.50 per square foot for one layer, up to $5 for heavy materials or extra layers.
  • Prices rounded to $100. Steep, tall or cut-up roofs cost more; we add no guessed surcharge.
